The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander in chief of the American revolutionary forces in 1775. The following year he forced the British out of Boston, New York lost, and the Delaware River in New Jersey, defeating the surprised enemy units later this year. Because of its recognized strategic forces, the two most important revolutionaries against the British Army of Saratoga and Yorktown. Negotiations with Congress, the U.S. colonial and ally France, supported by a small army and a fragile nation amid the threats of disintegration and failure.
